? THE HANDY HACKS

Step Inside America's Ugliest House – Then See What Alison Victoria Did to It.

The exterior makeover was nothing short of radical. Alison replaced the garish orange-and-blue paint with a subtle gray-green. She added wood-plank siding in varied shades and grains. The formerly gaping garage opening became a graceful arched entry, matching the home's existing arched roof. Massive wood columns, a brick-front patio, and fresh landscaping completed the look. A new front door in unvarnished wood with a stained-glass feature now welcomes guests. "It's both chic and rustic," Alison said, "and it finally fits the natural Vermont surroundings."

Inside, the kitchen was gutted and reborn. Alison installed recessed lighting, black custom cabinetry, and high-end black appliances. The showstopper is a circular island mounted atop a sculpted section of a natural tree trunk - a clever nod to the home's original centerpiece tree. The backsplash features a graphic black-and-white print of vintage botanical etchings. A custom vent hood covered in mirror tiles and a high-end gas range complete the space. Gone are the concrete floors and the monkey sculptures.

The living room is now open and airy. Alison removed the concrete bench seats and odd curved walls. Fresh white paint contrasts with exposed wood beams and black stair railings (now free of the paper-mâché birds that once clung to them). A contemporary white sofa, a barefoot-friendly area rug, and enlarged windows that flood the space with light make the room feel grand yet cozy. A wood-burning stove sits near a casual dining table with a sculpted natural-wood surface - the perfect spot for a quiet meal with a view of the White Mountains.
